Hurricane Otis Produced A 200+ MPH Wind Gust

New data suggests that Hurricane Otis' first wind gust was above 200 mph, putting it in the company of some of the world's greatest winds ever recorded. This occurred near Acapulco, Mexico.

Geophysics, meteorological instruments along the western edge of Acapulco Bay registered the tremendous winds just after midnight on October 25. Sustained winds reached a high of 114 mph (182.88 km/h).

There aren't many confirmed cases of wind gusts this strong: That's because severe winds and/or power outages in extreme weather events can lead to a loss of sensors.

However, the government produced photographs proving the equipment was still standing after Otis passed, despite a neighbouring fence collapsing due to the hurricane's high winds .
