The website News Addicts released a story with the heading "Thousands of Scientists Unite to Expose 'Climate Crisis' Hoax.

The article's cited paper was not signed by thousands of scientists. The paper has just roughly 1,600 alleged signatories, the great majority of whom have no declared expertise in climate science.

The post's title claims that "thousands of scientists" signed a statement denying the existence of a climate emergency, however the article itself reports that only 1,609 scientists.

The Global Climate Intelligence Group produced the paper in August, and it claims that the signatories include "scientists and professionals," rather than simply "scientists."

Many of the signatories mentioned by USA TODAY were not scientists, but rather engineers, doctors, psychologists, attorneys, architects, philosophers, educators, and IT/business experts.

When asked by USA TODAY how many scientists and how many climate and atmospheric scientists signed the letter, the intelligence organisation could not provide any information.

Additional signatories included almost a dozen "climate researchers." Many of these persons were also described as retiring from other, unrelated occupations or were categorised as "independent."
